Krabi Pt. 2

Saturday, August 06, 2011
Our coupon deal for Krabi also included one of the many tours available!
If you walk down the street at Ao Nang (the tourist area in Krabi), you'll see lots of "travel agencies". They basically handle any local tours/activities, as well as flights/boat/cab rides to neighbouring locations like Phuket.

Local tours include diving trips, snorkeling, kayaking, horse riding... They all annoyingly start at the same time in the morning so you only get to do one thing (I think this is on purpose) unless you're staying another day.
But everything is organised for you: they pick you up from the hotel, settle all transport, activities and meals. Not cheap though!

Anyway ours was called the 4-Island tour I think. It basically involved going on a boat to see 4 neighbouring islands (the beaches back at the hotel area are actually quite crappy), but thankfully it included snorkeling, which I have really been wanting to try! :D

Photobucket

Photobucket
This is quite far from our hotel area, but already the beach is much nicer lol. Alaric was hoping for daybeds and umbrellas! Krabi doesn't have that kind of thing.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Hehe sand dogs.

Photobucket
Random cute stray dog walking with us to our boat!

"What are you doing?"

Photobucket
"Give me the camera!"

First stop:

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
Lots of fishes in the shallow area!

Photobucket

Photobucket
Wah super vicious.

Photobucket

Photobucket
*Ooh fishie!*

Photobucket
*Bored liao*

Oh yeah I rarely have matching swimwear hahaha.
I always buy just the bikini top because I'd actually rather wear denim shorts on the bottom, so if I ever do buy bikini bottoms I buy generic plain ones like black or pink.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Next stop: Snorkeling!

Photobucket

Photobucket
Hahahaha unglam shot of my ass as I climb unto the top of the boat. I wanted a shot of me jumping into the water!

Photobucket

Photobucket
And this is what Alaric took. Sigh ):

Photobucket

Okay anyway snorkeling was quite disappointing ):

The waters weren't very clear so you can barely even see the bottom (which was just very nondescript rock) and there are hardly any fish! The only fish you see are the same yellow+blue ones we were feeding bread to earlier on.
Are there better snorkeling locations in the Southeast Asia area? I wanted like sparkling clear waters and pretty coral reefs!

Photobucket
The red thing on a strap on my right hand is an underwater camera! Haha sian I think all the pictures will just be murky green water ):

Photobucket

Lunchtime was kinda crappy (didn't take any photos).
They brought us to a random island which was quite ugly because it was full of prickly undergrowth and the beach/forest was littered with cans and styrofoam? I think a lot of tours bring the tourists there to eat.

They simply gave us mats to sit on and then a packet of rice with some meat and omelette. I'd rather pay a bit more to sit down at a proper table with actual Thai food!

(oh yeah the Lunch Island is counted as one of the 4 Islands haha wtf)

Last stop:
Photobucket
This is at Phi-Phi Island! It's kind of like a giant tourist resort because it has one or two hotels there (only accessible by boat) and lots of shops catered to tourists. One of the couples on our tour was staying here.

Phi-Phi Island is quite nice though! Looks better than the main Krabi area itself.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
Oooh what's this? We thought it was a jellyfish but there are no tentacles! It's just a weird round transparent thing. Unless the tentacles got ripped off or something? :S

Photobucket
Branch couldn't take my weight haha.

Photobucket

This was supposed to be the last island, after which we were meant to get back on the boat to be brought back to Krabi.

I saw people kayaking though, so we asked the tour guide and he said the other side of Phi-Phi Island provides kayaks.
He said that it was 100 Baht each to take a boat to the other side (or a 40-min walk) and that afterwards we could easily get a boat from there back to Krabi for 200 Baht each.

Sounded really good so we left our tour group to try kayaking! After all it was only 2pm in the afternoon.

Photobucket
Rested a bit at the other side, which has lots of shops and tourists!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Kayaking... is ok lah haha.
Nothing very exciting but there wasn't much else we would do!

It's a little scary since you're in the open water, but there are quite a few other couples out in kayaks (some even bravely taking pictures - I was terrified I'd drop my camera into the water) and of course the occasional boat bringing in more tourists.

Photobucket

So when we were done and wanted to take our 200 Baht ride back to Krabi... we found out what the catch was.

Knew it was too good to be true!

The boat operators gladly brought just the 2 of us to the other side of Phi-Phi Island just now. But to get back to Krabi? YOU NEED A FULL BOAT (8 people). It's 200 Baht/person.

They basically said we either wait, or pay for the whole boat (clearly what they're hoping for).
Super wtf!

It was already 5+pm and they said the boats end operation at 6pm. Even if they didn't have a full boat by then, they still won't take you unless you pay for the non-passengers.

Photobucket
This is Alaric looking annoyed while we wait for more passengers *fingers crossed*

There was another couple (so total 4 of us); we asked them if they'd be ok paying another 200 Baht (S$8) each but they refused. Which meant either we wait, or Alaric and I each pay 400 Baht MORE to get the boat.
We actually considered it but no way we're gonna pay for the rest and let that stupid couple get a ride right? Super annoyed!

Finally another 2 came (dad + young son) and he was totally fine with sharing the remaining cost with Alaric and I.

The stupid Caucasian couple was buay paiseh to the max ok!
All the other passengers are sharing the cost to get the boat and you just freeload when it's like, 70 Baht (S$2.80) more for you if you shared?!

Photobucket
Lol they had to push the boat off the sand. *PUI* Pay extra still must do labour.

Anyway at that moment another guy came so that was 7 people to go! So we just split for the last 1 person (cheapskate Caucasian couple still didn't share).

Alaric started talking to the last guy that came on (the whole boat quite annoyed at that couple so no one spoke to them haha); he had travelled to Krabi alone to do rock-climbing so Alaric asked him to join us for dinner later on.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Our hotel pool! The hotel is just alright to me, but it's pretty good for a coupon-deal one. But if not I'd rather be in those big-ass resort kinds because their pools are huge!

Anyway see the group of people in the middle? They were clearly tourists from Hong Kong and they were SO NOISY OMG.
They were really noisier than irritating, screeching 5-year old kids! Alaric (who lived in Hong Kong previously) says that it's because swimming pools are quite rare there due to the space constraint haha.

Photobucket

Met up with the guy from the boat (whose name is John) and had dinner! After dinner we had nothing to do so we decided to check out the "red light district" lol.

It's basically just bars, and if you spend enough at the bar, you can maybe "negotiate" payment to go off with one of the girls!
(For real, we were asking one of the girls how it works and how much she charges. Details below!)

Photobucket

Photobucket
That's John and Alaric playing pool!

John is originally from I-forgot-where, studied in Canada and now lives in Bermuda.

Like Bermuda from the Bermuda Triangle.

For the longest time I considered that maybe John was totally putting us on; telling us Bermuda has a population of 60,000 and that majority are Black people and etc.

I mean we've all heard of the Bermuda Triangle but I never thought that Bermuda was an actual island. I always just figured the Bermuda Triangle was an empty expanse of sea where lots of ships disappeared.

Anyway as soon as I had wifi on my phone I Googled it and ok. Bermuda exists and even the population figure is correct haha.

Photobucket
Angmoh guy flirting with the bar girls!

Photobucket

Photobucket
Lol changed targets liao.

Anyway he was damn retarded because he just seemed to buy lots of drinks (getting tipsy) and he never got any *action* despite flirting so much, whereas at the bar opposite we could see this two guys totally getting it on with the girls; like making out and erm.. touching places. And eventually we did see them leave with the girls.

Photobucket

So anyway we spoke to one of the girls later; invited her over to our table to chat with us (I mean with me there it's quite obvious we weren't the typical perverse tourists unless well... we're one of those with weird fetishes hahahaha)

The girl was really nice. Not pretty really, but she had a very nice and friendly smile and I guess guys would feel cheered up talking to her? (After all they're all lonely guys)

She was 30 years old, and said she used to work in a factory in Bangkok but that the pay here was A LOT better. Kinda sad really ):

We asked about how the "negotiation" works. She said the guy first has to spend 300 Baht in the bar before he can try asking a girl how much she charges.

How much the girl charges is up to her to choose, but she said that for her personally she charges 2000 Baht.

Kind of surprised! I mean I *think* that here it's something like S$50 for a girl from China? 2000 Baht is S$80, and she said that it's minimum 2000 Baht. And frankly she's not young (and she wasn't that slim) compared to some of the girls I see at dodgy places here.
But ok I mean good for her if she can charge more lah haha.

And also maybe the erm, "specifications" are different? Like 2000 Baht for a whole night versus S$50 for just sex alone? No clue how it works!

Ok that was probably the most interesting part of my whole Krabi trip LOL: finding out how much a bar girl charges.

Photobucket
-_- Alaric made me take a picture of this because the pub copied the Umbrella logo+name from the movie series Resident Evil (remember that Alice is always fighting against the Umbrella Corporation?).

Photobucket
That's for the flight back! (still Tiger Air, not Thai Airways). Hahaha when you fly budget you have to walk on the airport tarmac and climb up the stairs yourself.

I don't think I bought a single thing from Krabi? Can't remember. Alaric bought 3 beer sleeves for his friends and that was pretty much it!

i'd say Sipadan is the best if u're looking for really crystal clear water! here's the website --> http://www.swvresort.com/home.cfm
    =)

  7. Tioman has clear waters! Only disadvantage about water activities is that the current in the water is pretty strong. Still you could give it a try :)

  8. pulau perhentian and redang are both great places. and it's even cheaper and nearer to sg. the couples are really stingy. anyway isnt it hilarious to ask the price, like so awkward.

I agree with Anonymous! Redang Island is a really nice place to go snorkelling at, the waters are really pretty and clear. For the best place with the best view, you should try out Berjaya Resort! If you were to stay at other resorts, you might have to take an 8hour bus ride from SG(crazy!), but with Berjaya, you just have to take a short hour long flight. It may be slightly expensive but it's really awesome!! It has it's own private beach with clear sand and water, none of the sand bugs or any of that. Moreover, you can easily book snorkelling trips with legit operators just outside the hotel. Also, within walking distances are some pretty yummy (& cheap) home cooked food! And when you're feeling tired and lazy from walking from the lobby to your room... There are buggies to drive you through and fro. The life. How I miss it.
